The Healing Power of Rest

The Healing Power of Rest

One of the unanticipated blessings of the global lockdown to prevent the spread of coronavirus is the opportunity you have to get more rest.

When I’m doing a medical intuitive reading, the most common condition I find in my new clients is adrenal burnout.

People in our society are so stressed, so exhausted and have pushed themselves so hard that approximately 100 percent – 10 out of 10 – of my new clients find themselves in a state of depletion.

That’s why I published my book Unlimited Energy Now back in 2014.

Unlimited Energy Now remains probably the top book I recommend to my new clients who are wanting to regain their health because it goes over everything you can do on all five levels – physical, energetic, emotional, mental and spiritual – to rebuild your personal chi.

Your personal chi is so important that it’s the first thing I look at when I do a medical intuitive reading.

The better your personal chi, the more capable you are of withstanding illness and the more likely you will be to recover.

The fastest, cheapest and easies way to rebuild your energy is to rest.

As I am constantly pointing out, rest is a verb.

It is something you do.

If you rested one day every week for a year, you could accumulate 52 days of rest.

Why is this so crucial?

When you are constantly stressed, overworking, over exercising and pushing yourself beyond your personal capacities, you are running on the stress hormones adrenalin and cortisol – the two most destructive hormones in your body.

Initially it can feel good to run on adrenalin.

You feel busy and important!

The way cocaine works is that makes your body release a rush of adrenalin – you feel good until you crash.

The stress hormone cortisol breaks down your neurotransmitters, hair, bone, muscles, make you fat around the midsection, raising your cholesterol, increases inflammatory markers that cause pain and suffering and suppresses your immune system.

Need I say more?

There are two sides of your nervous system – the sympathetic and parasympathetic.

When you are constantly stressed you are stuck in your sympathetic nervous system.

Because every neuron in your sympathetic nervous system is connected to at least 20 other neurons, you are programmed to survive not to relax.

When you access your parasympathetic nervous system, you are able to relax, you stop pumping out the stress hormones that destroy everything important in your body.

You physically relax.

Your body can repair itself.

You will rebuild your immune system for FREE without having to spend $800 a month on expensive supplements.

And all you have to do is give yourself permission to be still!

Even the way we are taught to exercise in our culture is mostly about pushing.

Boot camps, jogging, marathons, high intensity workouts – they all tout the value of burning more and more calories without taking into consideration the hormonal effects of energy building exercise like yoga, tai chi, qi gong and walking.

So now here we are, in the greatest pandemic of our lifetimes.

There is no doubt that the challenges to our health, our money, our families, our children and our work have driven up stress to levels none of us could have foreseen.

We can allow the stress to overwhelm us or we can seize this opportunity to engage in an activity that I recommend in Unlimited Energy Now.

It’s called grizzly, after the hibernation rituals of grizzly bears.

What do you do when you make plans for grizzly?

You schedule time to rest.

What can you do when you are resting?

For all the overachievers out there (including me), this is what we can do to rest and rebuild:

  • Complete mental and physical rest
  • Sleep
  • Nap
  • Meditate
  • Pray
  • Watch movies but avoid violence
  • Read spiritual or uplifting books
  • Stretch
  • Take a hot bath
  • Hobbies that involves sitting, such as knitting, beading, needlework, quilting, needlepoint, woodworking, airplane making, drawing or painting
  • Do absolutely nothing
  • Lie in a hammock
  • Sit on the beach
  • Sit on a rock and stair out into the distance
  • Restorative yoga

As  I explained in Unlimited Energy Now, there are three stages of adrenal stress.

When you are in the later stages of adrenal burnout, your metabolism literally slows down. You have a hard time losing weight or maintaining a healthy weight without starving or over exercising.

Paradoxically resting to rebuild your personal chi and heal your adrenal glands may make a bigger difference in your weight control program than further starvation, fancy restrictive diets or high intensity exercise.

I recognize that many of us have additional responsibilities now – home schooling our children, taking care of loved ones who have fallen ill, shopping for scarce paper products, applying for government loans to prop our businesses, talking to our loved ones who feel anxious and depressed.

For sure, give yourself permission to take care of your survival needs but in the additional time you have at home give yourself permission to rest.

Your body will thank you.

You will be more mentally prepared to make clear decisions.

You will rebuild your immune system naturally without having to spend $800 a month on expensive supplements that strain your family budget.

You will give yourself time to process all the emotions that have come to the forefront, including anxiety and depression.

And most of all you will give yourself the opportunity to connect with your soul and to receive the soul guidance you are needing at this time.

Although there may still be much to be done, recognize that it is not uncommon for me to prescribe 21 days of complete rest to my clients because people are so burned out on all levels – physically, energetically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

In the past I would recommend that my clients get a calendar and schedule out half days or entire days of rest.

Now more than ever our lives have been put on pause.

We can use this time for our greater good so that we can come out on the other side better prepared to respond with increased personal energy acting out of our deep soul wisdom.

What is healing? Healing happens when you give yourself permission to rest.

Resources to Cope with the Coronavirus Pandemic

I’ve been searching around for ways to help everyone get through the Coronavirus, an illness known to attack the respiratory system, hinder breathing and adversely affect people’s lungs both during and after the virus.
We added an extra Saturday morning 10 a.m. yoga class on Zoom. You can find out about joining us at the link.
Turn to Mushti Mudra to release emotional stress when you don’t think you can handle any more anxiety, depression or loneliness. Find out by reading this blog.
And above all I know how profound the breathing exercises in The Little Book of Breathwork can be.
I wrote the book and produced a series of FREE videos of these exercises because I know you can usually cut your anxiety in half in a mere eight minutes. That’s why I called the breath work routine “Eight Minutes to Inner Peace.”
When it’s 2 a.m. and you can’t call your best friend, you can practice the breathing exercises, affirmations and hand mudras to feel better.
When you’re experiencing shortness of breath, anxiety, high blood pressure or don’t know what else to do to make yourself feel better, these are simple tools you can turn to for FREE.
If you are sick with Coronavirus and notice yourself having trouble breathing, you can turn to these breathing exercises, hand mudras and affirmations to redirect your chi and hopefully open up your airways.
