One of the simplest ways you can lift your personal vibration for inner peace, happiness and enlightenment is by listening to or chanting the Gayatri mantra.
No matter what your spiritual tradition, when you put yourself in contact with such high vibration energy, you heal yourself at very deep levels.
You can even feel your soul rejoicing.
All illness – no matter whether you have a cold, feel depressed or are suffering from cancer – is slowed down vibration.
All healing – no matter what the modality – occurs when you shift from slowed down to speeded up vibration.
This is the simplest way to understand what is healing.
When you want to keep yourself as healthy as possible, it’s important to include daily personal practices that keep your own vibration as uplifted as possible.
Every morning when I wake up, I begin to meditate.
After I meditate, I listen to the Gayatri mantra, one of the oldest, most sacred mantras, and then repeat or listen to a recorded version of the Lord’s prayer.
My favorite versions of the Gayatri mantra include one sung by Deva Premal you can listen to for FREE here on Youtube or a short, slightly over six-minute version by Shiva Datta Music LLC that you can download for 99 cents on Amazon that I listen to on the Insight Timer FREE meditation app.
The Gayatri mantra is believed to be between 2,500 or 3,500 years old.
It was written in the Vedic language in the Rigveda, an ancient Indian collection of Vedic sanskrit hymns.
Like the Lord’s prayer, the Gayatri mantra is a specific recitation of words:
Om
Bhur bhuvah svah
Tat savitur varenyam
Bhargo devasya dhimahi
Dhiyo yo nah pracodayat
There are multiple translations of these words. My favorite and simplest understanding is the translation by Swami Vivekananda:
“We meditate on the glory of that Being who has produced this universe; may He enlighten our minds.”
Legend has it that sage Vishwamitra was given the Gayatri mantra by the Supreme Being as a reward for his many years of deep penance and meditation.
By chanting of listening to the Gayatri mantra, just like speaking or listening to the Lord’s prayer, you attune your mind, body and soul to a deep, reverent connection to God.
I first learned the Gayatri mantra during my 20 years teaching and studying yoga.
As a medical intuitive healer, I include meditation, prayer, chanting and the practice of yoga as part of my personal self care.
In so doing I keep my own energy clear and connected to the divine.
It is my belief that when we stay open and pray with all sincerity to know and follow God’s will that we experience the blessing of divine direction in our lives.
Around the world, many people are exposed to extreme challenges – war, starvation, oppressive governments and the agony of physical pain.
Often we are not immediately able to shift our external circumstances but we can change our internal state by aligning ourselves at the deepest levels with the most loving vibrations and in so doing begin to free our souls.
What is healing?
Healing happens when we listen and pray sacred chants and mantras like the Gayatri mantra and Lord’s prayer.

Thank you for reminding me the power of this chant. I’ve always loved it – in the church I attended in California the choir would sing it and it was our ‘congregational song’ – the energy in the room was so palpable. I listened again this morning and it will now be part of my morning ritual as well. Many thanks and blessings!

Hi Catherine, loved to read your experience on the exalted Gayatri mantra. This short but extremely powerful mantra is much revered in Hinduism. You might be interested in the below excerpts on the Gayatri recital, from the Manu Smriti, a former lawbook of Hindus.
Verse 2.79. A man who shall 1000 times repeat those three (Om, the Vyahritis and the Gayatri) shall be released in a month even from a great offence, as a snake from his slough.
82. Whoever shall repeat day by day, for three years, without negligence, that sacred text, shall hereafter approach the Divine Essence, move as freely as air and assume an ethereal form.
83. The three triliteral monosyllable is an emblem of the Supreme, the suppressions of breath with a mind fixed on God are the highest devotion; but nothing is more exalted than the Gayatri; a declaration of truth is more excellent than silence.
By the sole repetition of the Gayatri a Brahmin indubitably attains beatitude, let him perform or not perform, any other religious act.
And a lot more.
My best wishes to your spiritual uplift!
Dear Hari, Thank you so much for reading my blog and for sharing your wisdom about the Gayatri mantra! Sacred mantras put us in a vibrational state where our entire being lifts up to God. Having grown up in the Christian tradition, the mantra I still to this day use most often is the Lord’s Prayer. I repeat the Lord’s Prayer silently to myself so often during the day I can’t tell you how many times I might repeat it. I use the Lord’s Prayer as a means of maintaining my personal connection to God and can tell if I stumble over the words if I am out of alignment. I enjoy listening to recordings of the Gayatri Mantra such as the one by Deva Premal during my personal yoga practice. This particular recording of the Gayatri by Deva Premal is two hours long: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlnHON3tAXo Let us all continue to focus on our divine connection so that we can be a channel for the love and light of God in all that we do for the benefit of all mankind. hi Catherine ., I am a Hindu Brahmin from South India and learnt Gayatri Mantra from my father through a formal ritualistic process called Upanayanam . The mantra is whispered in to the ears of the son by his father in this and he washes the feet of his dear father who has given him this maha mantra. My father used to chant it 1008 times every day and developed phenomenal memory. He passed away two years back and in his death bed too he told me “never stop chanting Gayatri Mantra”. It is indeed a very powerful mantra but also easy to recite and can be recited any where anytime. Only a pure mind is sufficient.
In Bhagvat Gita , Lord Krishna says “Among trees , I am the Banyan and among Mantras , I am Gayatri Mantra.”
I am glad to know that you are getting peace through the Gayatri Mantri. May peace and tranquility and joy fill your mind forever.
your devotee
Dear Subramaniam, Thank you so much for reading my blog! That is a very powerful story about what your father taught you about the Gayatri Mantra. I am impressed that your father chanted this mantra 108 times per day and that he advised you to continue the practice. May peace and love follow you all the days of your life! Love and light, Catherine Carrigan
